Heavy breaths surged in her ears, accompanied by a man’s scent completely different from a woman’s, and a towering figure pressing down on her filled her heart with instant terror.

In a panic, Yan Nanjing lifted her foot and delivered a fierce kick to the instep of the man behind her.

He wore deerskin boots and, perhaps not expecting her to go to such lengths, was caught off guard. Her foot struck solidly.

Though she appeared delicate and fair, standing upright she still had to look up at his imposing stature. No one would have guessed her strength was so unexpected — a single kick to his foot, even through the thick leather, brought a sharp, crushing pain.

Yan Nanjing had thrown all her strength into that kick, and she heard the man behind her inhale sharply. Seizing the moment, she struggled fiercely. The grip that bound her relaxed for a fleeting instant, and she immediately took the chance to free her hand from his grasp, shouting loudly for help, “Bai Su!”

She took two steps forward, only to feel a force far greater than before slam into her back. She was knocked to the ground completely unprepared, her vision darkening from the fall.

Faintly, she heard Bai Su outside the door, his footsteps turning frantic and disorderly from their earlier cautious pace.

“Is something wrong with the lady?”

Her head spun as she heard hurried footsteps approaching her side. Before they reached the door, Bai Su gave a startled cry, followed by a heavy thud as a body collapsed.

The noise was loud, piercingly clear against the snowy rain.

Could it be that this man had accomplices?

Gritting her teeth, Yan Nanjing reached for the hairpin in her hair.

Among the noble ladies in the city, the fashion was to style hair high and paint broad brows. Yan Nanjing had little interest in elaborate grooming and had simply pinned her hair up with a plain copper hairpin. Though the head of the pin was unadorned, its tail had been sharpened to a fine point. Like the dagger hidden close to her body, it was a weapon for self-defense.

Suddenly, she yanked out the copper pin and stabbed backward.

Perhaps the man did not expect her to be so fierce, for the first strike was unblocked.

The sharp hairpin struck the neck guard of his armor, producing a muted dull sound against the rhinoceros leather breastplate.

Then a sharp pain shot through her wrist as he grabbed it.

“You’re quite skilled, lady,” the man behind her said.

Yan Nanjing lifted her face to meet his gaze.

His palm was calloused from years of wielding blades and spears; pressing against her wrist, she could feel its roughness.

“You misunderstand,” he said evenly, his eyes shining like cold stars in the lamplight, his voice betraying no hint of anger or joy. “I have no intention of harming you.”

At that moment, the door, previously closed tight, was pushed open from outside. A blast of cold wind and snowflakes swept in.

Yan Nanjing looked up to see a figure clad in armor standing there, dragging an unconscious Bai Su.

“Jing Yue,” the man spoke, his voice still retaining a youthful rasp.
