After Zhao Tieqi bowed deeply in thanks, he stood up, gazing at the Five Tigers Soul-Breaking Spear in his hands. The more he looked, the more he loved it, unable to part with it.
Lu Yunduan spoke calmly and unhurriedly, “Don’t rush. Soon, you will have the chance to wield this Five Tigers Soul-Breaking Spear and show your true skill.”
“When?”
Zhao Tieqi clenched the long spear tightly, his eyes burning with battle fervor and desire.

Empress Long Yingchuan sat within the grand hall, while others stood respectfully on either side.
She slowly opened her mouth, her voice heavy with authority.
“Esteemed ministers, recent rumors in the streets claim that the Marquis of Dongzhou is plotting rebellion, and the investigation has confirmed these reports.”
After a brief silence, a minister stepped forward.
“Your Majesty, according to reliable intelligence, Dongzhou and Yongning City, the central stronghold of the capital, have recently closed their gates tightly, cutting off all outside access and severing contact with the capital.”
Long Yingchuan lowered her head slightly, her gaze sharp and ruthless as she looked at him.
“What exactly does your report imply, minister?”
“I believe all signs point to the Marquis of Dongzhou’s rebellion. I urge Your Majesty to mobilize troops immediately, without giving him any breathing room like we did with the Marquis of Xizhou. We should crush the traitors with the speed and suddenness of a lightning strike.”
Minister Fang spoke slowly and clearly, every word weighed with reason and truth.
Long Yingchuan’s heart seemed to solidify in belief of Dongzhou’s treason and promptly asked the other ministers.
“Do any of the other ministers have differing opinions?”
The court was filled mostly with sycophants. They exchanged glances, then all echoed in unison.
“I concur, Your Majesty.”
Long Yingchuan rose with overwhelming authority and immediately issued the imperial decree.
“All ministers, heed the imperial command.”
All the court officials knelt deeply.
“I hereby appoint General Mu Chuan of the Tiger Might as Commander-in-Chief to Pacify the East, Colonel Li Longli, and Cavalry Colonel Ye Chongwu, commanding fifty thousand troops, to march immediately to Dongzhou to quell the rebellion.”
“Long live the Emperor—long live, long live forever!”
Yongning City, city lord’s mansion.
Lu Yunduan was resting inside when noisy commotion outside woke him.
Just as Lu Yunduan was about to curse, a voice came out from outside.

“Master, the scouts report that the court has dispatched fifty thousand elite soldiers to attack Yongning City. By noon today, the army is less than ten miles away. Please give your orders.”
Upon hearing this, Lu Yunduan quickly dressed and burst through the door.
“Gan Ning, summon all generals to the city lord’s hall for a meeting.”
“Yes, sir.”
Gan Ning spurred his horse to gather the generals.
Lu Yunduan proceeded to the hall to await their arrival.
After one incense stick’s time, all generals and officers had gathered in the hall, prepared for battle.
“Gentlemen, you must have heard that the court has dispatched fifty thousand troops from the capital, marching straight to Yongning City, now less than ten miles away. What are your strategies to repel the enemy?”
Silence fell. No one spoke.
Indeed, these were battle-hardened generals, not strategists or advisors.
They were all burly men of action.
“All soldiers, listen to orders!”
Gan Ning and the other generals stood ready, prepared at a moment’s notice.
Lu Yunduan wasted no time and revealed his plan.
“The Art of War says to strike where the enemy least expects. They will surely assume we will defend Yongning City firmly, so we will take the initiative and attack, catching them unprepared.”
He then produced a map of Yongning City.
Pointing to Wuman Mountain on the map, Lu Yunduan explained, “This is their only route. The location is easy to defend but hard to attack. Mountains and cliffs surround it on all sides, with just one valley pass.”
“Gan Ning, you will lead the Hundred Cavalry Camp and two hundred Xiliang Iron Cavalry to position on the cliffs flanking the valley’s mouth. When the enemy is halfway through, unleash a volley of arrows and roll down boulders. Leave an escape route deliberately so they flee into our trap, then strike them suddenly.”
Gan Ning clasped his fists, his words brimming with fighting spirit.
“I obey your command.”
“Gan Ning, do you know why I entrust you with the battle at Wuman Mountain?”
Gan Ning did not know, for he never asked, only shaking his head.
“Because you are Gan Xingba of the Hundred Cavalry who once raided Cao’s camp. I expect you to display the same spirit as then and show the enemy your true strength.”
In an instant, Gan Ning’s mind flashed back to the legendary raid on Cao’s camp: the Hundred Cavalry’s thunderous assault that shocked the world.
His eyes gleamed with vigor and determination.
“I swear I will not fail your orders, and I will make sure they never return alive.”
“Good, worthy of being Gan Xingba.”
Others stirred restlessly, eager to join the battlefield.
“Next, I issue the second order: Zhao Tieqi, together with 1,800 other Xiliang Iron Cavalry, will be stationed at Shangfang Village. When the enemy’s morale wanes, our entire army will strike together and catch them unprepared.”
“I obey your command.”
All other generals were assigned missions, except for Luo Yi and the Eighteen Riders of Yanyun.
