Chapter 151: Displaying Might: The Martial Immortals of Wei, Part 1
No one had ever called him a pretty boy, and Wei Wuji was extremely displeased, seeing that he walked the path of rugged and bold heroism.
The military officer's words undoubtedly negated all his efforts over the past twenty days or so.
"Have I been tanned this dark all these days just to look like a pretty boy? This guy must be doing this on purpose!" Wei Wuji thought to himself.
Believe it or not, Captain Zhao was indeed doing it on purpose.
Wei Wuji’s rakish and unruly demeanor was the absolute picture of a spoiled scion from Wu'an City, and what this military officer despised most were precisely those young masters from the great clans.
Because such people, relying on their family's power and influence, grew self-righteous and looked down upon the glory protected by others with their very lives.
At this moment, in the captain's eyes, the fact that someone like Wei Wuji could sneak into the military camp was quite simply a disgrace to the Wei army.
Though he had been insulted and felt thoroughly aggrieved, Wei Wuji managed to forcibly suppress his rising anger, knowing he indeed had some fault in the matter.
This allowed Zheng Dali to let out a breath he had been holding. He was terrified that Wei Wuji would stubbornly talk back, which would undoubtedly escalate the situation into a major issue, bringing trouble even upon a prince.
"We had no intention of causing offense, so we ask the Honorable Captain to please not take offense." Zheng Dali stepped forward and apologized aloud.
Wei Wuji certainly could not bring himself to apologize, leaving Zheng Dali to act as the peacemaker, even though he too had just been called a fool.
The captain let out a cold snort, clearly unwilling to accept Zheng Dali's explanation.
"No intention of offense? From the way you two were jumping around just now, it looked like you thought our assessment was some kind of game, a joke?" the captain said coldly.
In the heart of the officer before them, what he loathed most were people who mocked and jested within the military camp.
Wei Wuji's playful behavior from moments ago had thoroughly enraged him, making him feel as though the military camp was being treated like a marketplace for monkey shows.
"General, we came here to observe and to learn. Please forgive us for any impropriety just now." Having no other choice, Wei Wuji had to step forward to demonstrate his sincerity.
After all, the officer harbored no malicious intent. What harm was there in admitting fault when he was in the wrong? A true hero knew when to bend and when to stretch.
Yet Wei Wuji’s action caused Zheng Dali to widen his eyes in utter astonishment.
In his impression, his young master was supremely overbearing—after all, he even beat up people belonging to Lady Wei without hesitation.
Initially, Wei Wuji believed that by lowering his posture and apologizing proactively, the other party would let the major matter turn minor and the minor matter vanish entirely.
However, he was mistaken once again...
"Learn? From the way you were giving instructions so boldly just now, it looked more like you came to teach us how to fight!" the captain sneered.
The Wei Wu Troops were renowned throughout the world, their reputation forged in iron and blood, and they could not be lightly insulted.
Even if the family background of the person before him was immensely powerful, this captain was determined to give him a severe dressing-down.
He was fearless, for standing behind him was the Wei Wu Army, and the supreme Marquis of Wei.
"Lord Captain, do not be angry, my family..." Zheng Dali stepped forward again, continuing to mediate, knowing that escalating the conflict would benefit no one.
Powerful and peerless though the Wei Wu Troops were, Wei Wuji was, after all, a prince of Wei, which meant both sides would ultimately end up taking the blame.
Before Zheng Dali could finish the phrase "my young master," however, he was cut off and scolded by the captain.
"What about your young master? Are you going to tell me how grand his background is, and that I should know what’s good for me?" As he spoke, the captain’s eyes remained fixed directly on Wei Wuji.
Well, that did it; Zheng Dali's attempt to smooth things over only made matters worse, as the captain abruptly cut off his words.
This was truly an unmerited disaster. Wei Wuji smiled bitterly to himself, never expecting this man to be so fiercely intolerant of evil.
Before Zheng Dali could explain, the captain let out another cold snort, then said in a deep voice, "I’ve seen plenty of your kind, Zhao Jun. Now I order you to leave this place immediately, or don't blame me for being discourteous."
Damn it! Even if you are intolerant of evil, you still need to be reasonable—you won't even let people explain! Reaching this point, Wei Wuji's anger finally flared up.
He could see it now: this fellow had stayed in the Wei Wu Troops for too long, breeding a haughty, self-righteous attitude where he looked down upon the entire world.
Though they had the backing of the Marquis of Wei and thus possessed the capital to act so arrogant, the one they had run into this time was none other than Wei Wuji himself, the biological son of the Marquis of Wei.
"You're ordering us to leave immediately? On what grounds?" Wei Wuji asked calmly, refusing to let himself be consumed by rage.
He continued, "I am a Commandant of the State of Wei, while you are merely a lowly military captain. How dare you issue orders to me?"
Since this fellow was so self-righteous, he would use lofty principles to press down upon him and see what else he had to say.
Faced with such questioning, Captain Zhao laughed in anger. Did the Wei Wu Troops need a reason to chase people away?
Zhao Jun stepped forward, pressing down with his imposing aura. "On what grounds? On the grounds that we are the Wei Wu Troops, the backbone of the State of Wei!"
Yes, he was proud—proud of the army to which he belonged, and thus he could afford to look down upon all else.
At this moment, Wei Wuji also noticed the strange change in Zheng Dali. Seeing Zhao Jun's self-important pride, a look of profound nostalgia flashed through Zheng Dali's eyes.
From this, Wei Wuji could deduce that deep down, Zheng Dali still yearned for the Wei Wu Troops, unable to completely sever his attachment to that past glory.
Yet, as Wei Wuji's chief bodyguard, upon seeing such oppressive force bearing down on them, Zheng Dali suddenly stepped forward, shielding Wei Wuji behind him.
Seeing this, Zhao Jun merely smiled. The young man opposite him was indeed a coward; he wondered if the military rank of commandant the fellow claimed to hold was entirely fabricated.
"Hahaha..." Zhao Jun made no effort to conceal his disdain, pointing a finger directly at Wei Wuji.
"Just as I thought, a spineless coward. Our Wu military camp only keeps men of iron and blood, we have no use for weaklings like you..." Zhao Jun said with utter contempt.
Zhao Jun had already seen through them; the person before him was nothing more than a useless wastrel nurtured by the aristocratic clans.
Insulted and reviled as a weakling, Wei Wuji felt a surge of genuine fury, harboring a sudden impulse to take out a whip and lash the man standing before him.
"Are you insulting me?" Wei Wuji pushed Zheng Dali aside, facing Zhao Jun directly with a very gloomy expression.
Seeing Wei Wuji grow angry, Zhao Jun laughed casually and said, "If I wasn't talking about you, could I be talking about your bodyguard?"
"If you apologize right now, I might still let you off!" Wei Wuji said coldly, looking at Zhao Jun as if gazing at an absolute fool.
Regardless of his underlying motives, and regardless of whether Wei Wuji's previous actions were right or wrong, Zhao Jun's behavior made it impossible for anyone to view him as standing on the side of justice.
"Apologize?" Zhao Jun repeated the word, as if he had just heard the greatest joke in the world.
"You want me to apologize?" Zhao Jun pointed at his own face.
"Were it not for the strict constraints of military law, I would have taken care of you myself long ago and beaten you to a pulp," Zhao Jun sneered, though there was another sentence he left unsaid.
He restrained himself not only because of military law, but also out of lingering caution regarding Wei Wuji's possible rank as a commandant. Beating up a nameless soldier was of no consequence, but if the fellow truly turned out to be a commandant in the Wei army, the fallout would not be easily settled.
Observing Wei Wuji's unruffled and unyielding demeanor, Zhao Jun actually began to believe him a little—perhaps he really was a commandant.
Seeing how utterly arrogant Zhao Jun was, Wei Wuji laughed in exasperation. He simply could not understand why this fellow had to target him specifically.
Could it be that the word "villain" was written across his face? Wei Wuji was utterly speechless. Didn't he look a lot like his cheap father?
Yet, at a crucial moment like this, why couldn't these people recognize him?
Come to think of it, he had only himself to blame for baking himself so dark that he had lost all distinct recognizability.
Though he could easily depart by simply revealing his true identity, Wei Wuji could not swallow this insult.
He decided he would give this fellow a sound lesson; Wei Wuji had a temper of his own, especially when someone dared to call him a weakling scum.
