Sure enough, the reins in Mo Zixiao’s hands seemed to guide his horse involuntarily toward the Marquis’s residence.

Pang Hu rode close behind him, and the two men traveled one after the other along the most prosperous streets of the capital.

“Goodness, have you all heard? The Chancellor’s residence took in another young lady this morning. Tsk, tsk, I wonder how long the poor girl will last.”

“Indeed. Who knows whether she’ll make it out alive? It’s truly pitiful.”

“I heard her own mother personally sent her there.”

“Goodness, I saw the Marquis’s carriage parked outside the Chancellor’s residence this morning. Could that young lady be the eldest daughter Marquis Chu just brought back from the Duke of State Pacifying’s residence?”

Pang Hu happened to pass by the group discussing the matter. The moment he heard their words, he was startled. He immediately pulled hard on the reins and caught up with Mo Zixiao.

“General, this is bad. I just heard the commoners say that the Marquis’s carriage was parked outside the Chancellor’s residence this morning, and that a young lady was sent inside.”

Upon hearing this, Mo Zixiao arched his brows. Without even having time to respond to Pang Hu, he gripped the reins tightly and urged his horse toward the Marquis’s residence at a gallop.

It was just past noon, and the gates of the Marquis’s residence were tightly shut.

Mo Zixiao and Pang Hu dismounted, and Pang Hu knocked on the gate.

Before long, a young servant came running to open it.

“General Mo, you’ve arrived. Please come in.”

Mo Zixiao’s face was dark, his sharp brows drawn into a tight knot. With a murderous fury in his eyes, he strode inside.

Pang Hu followed close behind, wearing the same grim expression.

The young servant was so frightened that he hurried to the front hall to report General Mo’s arrival to Marquis Chu.

“General, please wait.”

Wang Mu’s voice was extremely soft, but Mo Zixiao and Pang Hu still heard him.

The two men stopped and turned toward the sound.

They saw Wang Mu crouching beneath the bushes by the roadside. He stared at Mo Zixiao with utmost caution and an expression of earnest pleading.

Choking back sobs, he said, “General, please save our young lady. Madam took her to the Chancellor’s residence first thing this morning, but she still hasn’t returned. The second young miss said that she may be in grave danger.” As he finished speaking, Wang Mu’s eyes reddened.

Sure enough, the young lady who had been sent to the Chancellor’s residence that morning was Chu Xi.

Upon hearing this, Mo Zixiao’s heart sank violently. His sturdy body trembled involuntarily, and his legs seemed to lose all strength in an instant. He nearly collapsed where he stood.

“General.” Pang Hu immediately stepped forward and firmly supported him.

“I’m fine.” Mo Zixiao turned his head. Gritting his teeth, he glared furiously toward the front hall of the Marquis’s residence, hatred surging fiercely in his eyes.

Pang Hu urged anxiously, “General, we must go.”

Mo Zixiao said nothing more. He turned around and strode out of the Marquis’s residence.

After receiving the servant’s report, Marquis Chu waited for some time but saw no sign of Mo Zixiao entering. He therefore came out to see what was happening, only to find Mo Zixiao storming out through the gates with Pang Hu, his entire being charged with fury.

“What happened? Could he have received some news?” Marquis Chu frowned slightly, overcome by a sudden sense of foreboding.

Before Mo Zixiao and Pang Hu could mount their horses outside the residence, Wang Mu came running after them.

“General, take this servant with you. Our young lady and Cai Ping still haven’t returned, and I don’t want to remain in this Marquis’s residence any longer. Even if I must die, I will die together with our young lady and Cai Ping.”

It turned out that Wang Mu had slipped out while the gate servant was inside making his report.

Pang Hu looked toward Mo Zixiao.

Mo Zixiao sighed, then nodded.

Only then did Pang Hu say to Wang Mu, “Get on.”

At that moment, Mo Zixiao wished he could sprout wings and fly. He did not want to waste even another moment, and immediately galloped toward the Chancellor’s residence.
