Chapter Six: Simply Going with the Flow
"You..." Marquis Chu was once again left speechless by Chu Xi.
Madam Liu quickly stood up, glaring at Chu Xi. "Enough, you should know when to stop. After all, the Marquis is your own father."
Chu Xi smiled coldly. "Then I shall accept these things."
She then turned to the young servants and maids still holding the items. "Take everything to my quarters."
The servants and maids dared not move, all eyes turning to the Marquis and Madam Liu seated in the main hall, waiting for their orders.
Madam Liu helplessly waved them off.
Only then did the servants carry the items and leave.
Seeing this, Chu Yue smiled. "After all this fuss, Big Sister must be tired. Let's go back and rest."
Madam Liu understood the younger daughter's intention to give everyone an easy way out, especially for the Marquis, and silently allowed Chu Xi to leave.
Enough was enough; it was time to end it on a good note.
With this thought, Chu Xi stood, bowed with the colorful screen as a witness, then decisively turned and stepped out of the main hall.
Just a few steps outside, she ran into Wang Mu rushing over anxiously.
"Miss, are you alright?" he asked with a worried expression.
Chu Xi smiled faintly. "Why did you come running? I'm fine."
Wang Mu’s voice trembled. "I heard the Marquis wanted to punish you with family discipline, so I came running. You just left the Duke of Zhen Guo's mansion, your body is weak—how could you possibly endure the Marquis House's family laws?"
Even a mere servant who followed her could see this, yet the man who claimed to be her own father ignored her frailty and intended to use family discipline to vent his shame and anger.
At this thought, Chu Xi’s heart was twisted with pain, tears streaming down uncontrollably.
Cai Ping quickly handed her a handkerchief and reminded, "Miss, let’s go back quickly."
Chu Xi nodded, then said to Wang Mu, "I'm fine. Don’t worry and go back. Come again first thing tomorrow morning."
Wang Mu could only reply, "Yes," then walked away, glancing back at every step.
Back in the courtyard, Cai Ping promptly closed the door, then entered the room to carefully inventory the items sent by Mo Zixiao, securing them all with great care.
Chu Xi sat nearby, her gaze vacant as she stared out into the pitch-black night, as if foreseeing her future—a fate shrouded in darkness and devoid of light.
After Chu Xi left, Chu Yue also came out with the maid Chun Ya.
Chun Ya tilted her head with a sweet, innocent look. "Second Miss, I think the Marquis doesn’t like the Eldest Miss. You shouldn’t always side with her and make the Marquis unhappy."
Chu Yue scoffed and rolled her eyes. "What do you know? I’m not helping her—I’m just going with the flow."
"Ah?" Chun Ya genuinely didn’t understand.
Chu Yue sighed lightly. "Do you think Mo Zixiao sent those things for no reason? Clearly, he’s rebuking our parents, warning the Marquis House to never mistreat Chu Xi again. Those gifts are meant to slap our parents in the face."
Chun Ya finally understood. "So the current Eldest Miss actually has the backing of a third-rank General Tiger’s Fang. His affection for her has never wavered—he’s truly devoted."
Chu Yue shook her head. "Something feels off. For three years, our parents wouldn’t even mention Big Sister to avoid guilt. How did they suddenly go to the palace and ask the Emperor to have her returned to the Marquis House?"
Chun Ya smiled. "If Eldest Miss really marries General Mo, wouldn’t the Marquis House have a perfect son-in-law?"
This remark suddenly sparked a thought in Chu Yue, and she exclaimed in shock, "Heavens! Could it be..."
