Chapter Twenty-Eight: For a Certain Purpose
That afternoon, accompanied by Bai Yun, Lin Tian’s spirits improved considerably.
During that time, Liu Qingqing came by several times. After checking, she was surprised to note that Lin Tian’s condition had greatly improved.
She even joked, “Had I known this earlier, you should have had this little sister come keep you company sooner.”
Bai Yun shyly lowered her head and remained silent.
“Miss Liu, don’t say that; she’s sensitive about her pride,” Lin Tian said.
Liu Qingqing’s interest was piqued by his words. She scrutinized the fourteen- or fifteen-year-old girl and asked, “Is this little sister a relative of yours?”
Bai Yun nodded. “Yes, my companions and I are all relatives of Brother Lin.”
“Oh, companions too?”
“Yes, that’s right, it’s just that…”
Bai Yun then revealed that she and Lin Tian were orphans.
Upon hearing this, Liu Qingqing’s gaze grew sympathetic. She recalled how earlier that morning she had complained about her hard luck in front of Lin Tian.
“Oh, I really am such a wretch!”
“Nurse sister, what are you saying?”
“Nothing, nothing at all.”
Liu Qingqing smiled and pointed to a small packet of bread and a box of pure milk on the iron box, asking, “Why are these foods separated from the others over there?”
The other food she referred to was a box of milk and several packets of finely packaged bread on another hospital bed.
Those items had been brought by Mother Xiao and others, and they looked quite expensive.
In fact, the value of those goods surpassed the annual food allowance of the orphanage.
However, Lin Tian had no intention of touching those; he looked at them with disdain, barely sparing them a glance.
“I plan to have Bai Yun take those back to my companions to eat. These here are enough for me,” Lin Tian offered as an excuse.
Upon hearing this, Liu Qingqing’s curiosity was piqued. She scratched her ear and quietly asked, “Can you tell me, are those two women in their twenties who came before also your family?”
“Which two?” Lin Tian asked, confused.
“The one who told me your body moved a bit, the tall girl with a high ponytail, about one seventy-something tall.”
“Sister Lin?”
“Yes, that’s her!” Liu Qingqing slapped her thigh. “Looks like she really is your sister. No wonder she cares about you so much. When the associate chief physician asked which of them would sign, she didn’t hesitate at all.”
Hearing the description, Lin Tian felt quite touched and then asked, “Who is the other person you mentioned?”
“The other one is the one who slept in your ward yesterday and went out this morning. She’s your sister too?”
“Yes.”
Lin Tian’s answer made Liu Qingqing a bit envious. She thought that although he was an orphan, aside from the lack of blood ties, his family seemed pretty complete.
But the next moment, Lin Tian abruptly changed the subject. “One of them is like family, and the other is actually my real sister.”
Liu Qingqing’s eyes widened, suddenly sensing something was amiss. “Wait, didn’t you say you’re an orphan?”
“Yes, but I didn’t just pop out of a crack in a rock,” Lin Tian explained somewhat helplessly.
To be honest, he hadn’t intended to reveal these details in the first place; Bai Yun had just spoken too quickly.
Liu Qingqing didn’t press further on that matter but instead shifted to another topic. “Are the three who came to see you this morning also your relatives?”
She naturally meant Mother Xiao, Xiao Caiyue, and Xiao Chusheng.
Lin Tian shook his head. “No.”
“Oh? Not at all?” Liu Qingqing clicked her tongue. “But I noticed that the young woman looks somewhat like your sister, and the older woman also resembles her a bit, though the young man doesn’t seem related at all.”
Lin Tian remained silent, sweat forming nervously on his forehead.
Bai Yun tugged his hand and asked, “Brother Lin, are you feeling unwell?”
As a nurse, Liu Qingqing immediately saw the reason. “He’s running a fever.”
“How can someone get a fever in this weather?” Bai Yun was puzzled.
Liu Qingqing thought about it and then examined him closely. “Yeah, it doesn’t make sense. Let me get the thermometer.”
She actually suspected Lin Tian was experiencing chills.
Sure enough, after a few minutes, she took out the thermometer from under his armpit and saw it read thirty-six point three degrees Celsius.
“Isn’t the human body supposed to be warm-blooded? Why is his temperature dropping?” Bai Yun, having at least attended middle school biology, knew enough to start worrying.
“Don’t worry, it’s not a big problem,” Liu Qingqing said, standing up and heading out. “I’ll get some medicine. You watch over him first.”
Liu Qingqing herself had experienced hypothermia as a child during early summer months. She had wrapped herself in a thick blanket from the cold.
Because of that, her parents had scolded her, and later, after a doctor’s visit and medication, she recovered.
Even now, she hadn’t forgotten the experience.
Drawing on her memory, it didn’t take her long to prepare the medicine, along with some slightly cooled boiled water for the concoction.
Once ready, she returned to the ward carrying a bowl of medicine and personally handed it to Lin Tian.
“Miss Liu, thank you,” Lin Tian said gratefully as he recovered.
“It’s my duty. No need to thank me,” Liu Qingqing waved her hand, signaling it was unnecessary, though inwardly she had her own little schemes.
From the current situation, Lin Tian’s two sisters must hold some significant status. If she could get along well with him, it would be like hitching her wagon to a star.
Truly clever.
As for Bai Yun, she had no such thoughts. She was simply happy as long as Lin Tian was well.
“Xiao Tian,” Liu Qingqing tried to sound more familiar, “did you fall asleep last night without covering yourself with a blanket?”
“I don’t think so,” Lin Tian replied uncertainly.
“That’s strange,” Liu Qingqing muttered, “Besides, the ward’s air conditioning runs at night. The temperature shouldn’t be low.”
Hearing this, Lin Tian roughly understood why.
After all, his body had been weak and sickly since childhood. Though once beaten nearly to death and unexpectedly granted the Heavenly Eye by the Xiao family’s patriarch, his health had since become increasingly strange.
Since he remained silent, Liu Qingqing told him to rest while she and Bai Yun went to get the medicine.
In the corridor, Liu Qingqing glanced at the timid little girl trailing behind and teased, “Why do you become so shy when you’re away from that boy?”
Seeing Bai Yun remain silent, she carefully explained the medicine’s dosage and precautions before attending to other matters.
Back in the ward, Lin Tian asked Bai Yun, “What’s wrong?”
“Brother Lin…” Bai Yun hesitated, “I feel like that sister just now might have some bad intentions… no, not good ones. In short, I think she’s deliberately getting close to you for some purpose.”
