Upon hearing Mona’s words, Rowan’s face twitched slightly, but he still spoke in a deep voice:
“Let’s start with the bad news.”
Mona pointed to the video on the computer screen:
“The bad news is that the car accident happened at night. The lighting was very dim, and most of the footage recorded by the handheld camera is just black; nothing can be seen clearly.”
Nearby, Ryder glanced at the pitch-black screen on Mona’s computer and frowned deeply.
Rowan’s expression also darkened, but he pressed on:
“And the good news?”
Mona’s fingers danced swiftly across the keyboard, quickly pulling up the latter half of the video:
“The good news is that when the ambulance arrived, its red and blue lights were flashing. Only this brief segment of the video shows the actual scene at that moment.”
Watching the shaky video caused by the handheld camera, Ryder rolled his eyes:
“Mona, that hardly counts as good news.”
Mona spread her hands with a smile:
“But at least there’s a segment to watch, which means your efforts weren’t in vain.”
“...”
Rowan said nothing further and silently observed the video on the computer.
Ryder, feeling somewhat speechless, was about to speak when a familiar female voice suddenly came from the entrance of Investigation Team Five:
“I’m back!”
Everyone turned to see Lacey holding a large cardboard box.
Ryder quickly stood up and took the box from her, then pulled out a folder inside, asking curiously:
“What are all these?”
“These are materials the CIA sent me.”
Lacey plopped down at her workstation, took a sip of coffee, and waved her hand:
“They include the stolen laptop belonging to Evander, and information on a soldier named Jacquel.”
Mentioning the laptop, Lacey looked at Rowan with a smiling gleam in her eyes.
At the hospital, upon learning the exact condition of the short-haired white man who was injured, the elderly woman’s expression was filled with emotion.
Later, when that elderly woman ordered her subordinates to hand over the laptop and documents to her, her face showed a mixture of annoyance and reluctant compliance. Lacey, who knew the background of the case from Augustus, remained expressionless but was secretly delighted.
The FBI and CIA had never gotten along, and often the FBI was at a disadvantage.
After all, the FBI is under the Department of Justice and must adhere to reason and law at times.
But the CIA is a separate entity, with no one above them to control; lawlessness and irrationality are their norm.
Having come from FBI intelligence, Lacey knew this well and had often been mocked by the CIA during her previous work.
So when she learned that the short-haired white man Rowan had sent to the hospital was actually from the CIA, Lacey’s eyes sparkled with joy, almost wanting to stuff all the little cards in her pocket into Rowan’s hands!

Page 2/3

...However, after some thought, Lacey realized giving all the cards to Rowan was a bit inappropriate since they were teammates, and she needed to consider Rowan’s well-being.
After answering Ryder’s question, Lacey quietly approached Rowan, who was watching the video, and discreetly slipped three cards into his hand without drawing others’ attention.
“?”
Looking at the cards in his pocket, Rowan was puzzled.
Tilting his head, he glanced at Lacey, who smiled faintly, patted his shoulder, and whispered:
“They’re all good places, but remember not to stay out too late; you have work the next day.”
“...”
Though unsure of what was going on, Rowan pondered for a few seconds before silently pocketing the cards.
He had no other intention—just wanting to broaden his horizons while still young.
Ryder briefly flipped through the materials in the box and felt a headache coming on.
Looking up and seeing Rowan and Lacey whispering together, Ryder immediately joined them with a smile:
“So, any new developments?”
Hearing Ryder’s words, Mona, who was also looking through the materials, turned around and joined them.
Lacey, who was about to describe some scenic spots, twitched her mouth awkwardly. Rowan cleared his throat, adjusted the video, and spoke seriously:
“Pay close attention.”
The three quickly turned their eyes to the computer.
The shaky video showed the ambulance arriving; two female nurses and a driver hurriedly got out, rescued the unconscious Evander from the vehicle, placed him on a stretcher, and carried the stretcher into the ambulance.
After the video ended, Mona brightened after a moment of thought and immediately began typing rapidly.
Lacey watched carefully again and suddenly understood, while Ryder scratched his head, looking at Rowan with confusion.
Seeing this, Rowan rewound the video to the moment the ambulance driver got out and patiently explained:
“Watch the ambulance driver closely.”
The video showed that the ambulance driver was the first to arrive at the accident scene.
But the first thing he did was not to check on Evander, who was trapped in the driver’s seat, nor to prepare to rescue him. Instead, he immediately reached for Evander’s neck to check if he was dead.
“That seems normal, right?”
Ryder asked, tilting his head after watching the video.
“No, pay attention to the details.”
Rowan shook his head and slowed down the video. Then Ryder noticed that after confirming Evander was dead, the ambulance driver nodded slightly and his abdomen slowly expanded.
It was clear the ambulance driver exhaled a breath.
Moreover, the way the ambulance driver moved Evander out of the driver’s seat was rough and direct—something that relatives would scold over.
After hearing Rowan’s explanation, Ryder nodded in sudden understanding. At that moment, Mona suddenly exclaimed loudly:
“Rowan! I’ve found information on this ambulance driver!”

Upon hearing this, Rowan and Ryder immediately leaned in. Mona didn’t hesitate and said directly:
“The ambulance driver’s name is Kennerly Martin.
After the car accident last night, he took leave and went home. He didn’t come to work today, and his colleagues have been calling him, but there’s been no answer.”
“Okay.”
Upon hearing this, Rowan didn’t hesitate. He stood up and led Ryder toward the equipment room:
“Let’s go have a chat with Mr. Martin right now.”

A small community in Brooklyn.
A dark SUV sped in from afar and suddenly braked sharply, stopping by the roadside.
Rowan, driving, and Ryder, sitting in the passenger seat, carefully checked their gear. After confirming everything was in order, they exchanged a glance and smiled before quickly opening the doors and heading toward the community across the street.
Martin’s apartment was on the fifth floor. Upon arrival, Rowan and Ryder stood on either side of the door with guns drawn in tactical positions.
Counting down silently—three, two, one—Rowan raised his right foot and kicked the door open with force.
Bang—
“FBI!”
Seeing the door flying into the room and collapsing onto the living room sofa, Ryder’s face was full of shock.
But this was not the time for questions. Swallowing nervously, Ryder hurriedly followed Rowan to sweep every room in the apartment.
“Clear!”
“Clear!”
After confirming the bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom were empty, Rowan and Ryder reported back simultaneously.
Holstering their weapons and returning to the living room, Rowan began to carefully search the apartment.
Ryder grabbed the broken door from the sofa, shook it vigorously in disbelief, and looked at Rowan:
“Rowan, how did you do that?”
“Forget that for now. Come here quickly!”
Without answering Ryder’s question, Rowan beckoned him to the secondary bedroom.
Entering the room and leaving the door behind, Ryder saw, to his astonishment, a human-shaped cocoon wrapped in plastic inside the wardrobe.
Not only that, but Rowan had also found a pile of wires, ball bearings, nails, and other items under the bed in the secondary bedroom.
