Volume One Mutation Chapter Forty-Seven The G15 Defensive Line Has Not Fallen!
Watching as Liu Cong was hurled by a tremendous force, slamming hard against the ground and leaving a long trail in the dirt, Liu Qingqing couldn’t help but cry out in alarm.
“Brother Liu!”
She spun around, about to rush down the stairs to check on Liu Cong’s injuries, but before she could leave, Zhang Chu, who had come to his senses, grabbed her arm.
“Are you out of your mind? The place below is crawling with monsters. Are you trying to get yourself killed? Liu Cong is tougher than you think. Stay here and don’t make things harder for him!”
Liu Qingqing’s face was still full of worry, but she obediently stayed put, moving to the window to look down toward where Liu Cong had fallen. Her expression was anxious, her small hands clenched into fists.
Although, at the very instant he struck the ground, Liu Cong had managed to shield himself with a layer of energy, the fierce impact still left him in pain all over, especially his back, which burned as if set aflame.
Struggling out of the crater, Liu Cong glared at the giant seahorse and gritted his teeth. “Damn it, last time it was that snake whipping me to the ground. Now it’s you again. Do you really think I’m a pushover?”
By now, several hideous mutant creatures had surrounded him, baring their fangs and claws as they fought over the delicious human prey. Liu Cong even saw the drool dripping from their mouths in anticipation.
With a few casual slashes of sword energy, he cut down the mutants that had approached, then watched as the giant seahorse spat out bubbles, collecting the scattered corpses of both humans and monsters, enveloping them and floating them over to itself before swallowing them whole.
A bizarre scene unfolded as countless bubbles, each holding a corpse, drifted through the air—a grotesque tableau straight from an alien world.
In just moments, the giant seahorse devoured hundreds of bodies, seemingly recharged by their energy. The dense black radiance covering its body quickly returned to full strength.
Liu Cong shot up from the ground, leaping into the air like a bolt of lightning, and in an instant he was before the giant seahorse. Both hands raised the black-and-white divine sword high, and brilliant light burst from the blade as he brought it crashing down upon the monster’s head. A surge of sword energy, stronger than anything before, flew silently into the creature’s skull.
Like a knife through tofu, the razor-sharp sword energy sliced the seahorse’s long, gaping mouth cleanly in two. The beast howled in agony and fury, lashing its long tail at Liu Cong, but he dodged with ease.
Driven mad, the seahorse whipped its tail dozens of times. Though it couldn’t so much as graze Liu Cong, each blow shattered the walls of G15 nearby, leaving rubble everywhere and killing at least a dozen soldiers who failed to dodge in time.
Seeing this, Liu Cong grew anxious. The monster was enormous and incredibly clumsy—no threat to him. Yet the damage he could inflict was limited, and the madly flailing tail was covered in sharp spines that glowed with a haunting black light. He dared not take the risk.
He saw only two choices: either finish the fight quickly, or lure the monster away to open ground to avoid further destruction here.
Quick to realize his limited options, Liu Cong chose the second and began deliberately leading the giant seahorse away from G15.
Liu Qingqing and Zhang Chu, both sharp-witted, quickly grasped Liu Cong’s intent, and were moved by his selflessness.
At some point, a helicopter appeared, landing on the helipad beside the command center. A man climbed out from the cockpit.
“Commander, I’m here to pick you up!” The newcomer saluted Zhang Chu, then, spotting the ethereal Liu Qingqing, couldn’t tear his eyes away.
He was the very bodyguard Zhang Chu had kicked earlier.
“Nonsense! Who told you to come back? Aren’t you afraid you’d get blown to bits by a stray missile?” Though Zhang Chu was secretly touched, he scolded harshly.
The young guard was used to his commander’s way of speaking and knew he meant no real reproach. Grinning, he replied, “Sir, we’d barely flown away when we saw a missile incoming. We all thought you were in danger and felt awful. Only when we reached the rendezvous did we learn the missile had somehow veered off and didn’t explode here, so I rushed back to pick you up!”
“Hmph! You call that ‘somehow’? Our Reaper arrived in time and stopped the missile from detonating. Otherwise, this place would be a ruin by now!” Zhang Chu’s jaw clenched as he spoke.
“Sir, you’d better get on the chopper with this young lady and get out of here,” the guard suggested, finally averting his gaze from Liu Qingqing.
He had seen Liu Cong’s battle with the seahorse on approach and was deeply in awe. Anyone serving at the commander’s side couldn’t be a fool; he immediately realized why there was suddenly a fairy among them.
“No rush! Give me your radio,” Zhang Chu said.
The guard unhooked the device from his belt and handed it over.
Zhang Chu switched to a specific channel and spoke into it. “Listen up, everyone! This is Zhang Chu. The battle isn’t over yet! Pick up your weapons and keep fighting. Just a few more minutes—our Reaper will finish that monster and return!”
Though the G15 walls had been breached, letting in hordes of monsters, most were quickly driven off by Liu Cong. The few that slipped through were swiftly killed by the soldiers. While Liu Cong and the creature fought, the troops regrouped and avoided danger. Now, hearing their commander’s voice, they found new resolve and returned to their posts.
Zhang Chu kept his eyes glued to the long front. When he began spotting soldiers reappearing in his field of view, tears of joy welled up.
“Wonderful! They’re all still alive!”
Though the walls had been breached, the casualties among the soldiers were far fewer than Zhang Chu had feared. Most had retreated to safe positions and blocked the mutants’ advance with their guns, confining the monsters to a small area. Aside from those at the breach, nearly everyone survived; only a handful perished from contact with the black water from the bursting bubbles or from flying debris.
“Send the word out! Tell the world that the G15 defense line still stands!”
The young guard, fired up, pulled out his laptop and quickly drafted a statement.
Zhang Chu took out his phone and sent him several photos. “Add these, too.”
The guard scanned through them, his excitement mounting. “Sir, these are fantastic! With these photos, G15 is going to make headlines!”
“Of course! It took me a lot of effort to get those shots,” Zhang Chu replied with a satisfied smile.
Inspired, words poured onto the screen. Minutes later, the official G15 account released a statement: “The Reaper Descends! G15 Stands Firm Against the Mutant Horde!”
“Today, the waters surrounding our defense line surged, and the long-rumored mutant sea creatures appeared for the first time! Swarms of these colossal, deadly monsters invaded our line, but our thousands of warriors stood unflinching on the front, fighting bravely…” (Here followed a photo of the black tide of monsters and bodies strewn across the beach.)
“Our elite defenders, not only well-equipped but precise in their marksmanship, shattered the mutant horde. Yet at the crucial moment, a sea monster over 150 meters tall entered the fray, smashing through our walls and threatening us with grave peril and loss.” (Attached: a photo of the giant seahorse in all its fearsome glory.)
“In our darkest hour, the Sword Immortal of Huaxia arrived and dealt the beast a devastating blow…” (Here: a shot of Liu Cong unleashing sword energy at the monster.)
“As disaster loomed, our warriors fought with courage—without a hint of fear. Through everyone’s efforts, we held the G15 line and secured the safety of dozens of zones behind us!” (Here: a picture of countless soldiers holding their posts amid the ruins.)
Liu Qingqing, watching nearby, couldn’t help but remark with a wry smile, “You sure know how to spin things. If I hadn’t seen it myself, I’d believe every word.”
Zhang Chu and the bodyguard exchanged a sheepish glance. “We can’t let our dirty laundry show, you know. This isn’t just for our own people—foreigners will read it too. We can’t let them laugh at us, right? Miss, please keep what happened here to yourself. Our soldiers have risked their lives to protect the nation—they deserve this honor.”
Liu Qingqing burst into laughter, saying nothing more. She had only meant to tease them, seeing their guilty expressions. That was all.
