Chapter 36: The Dark Night Approaches
Duan Fei’s heart sank abruptly. Dark Night—the terrifying leader of the assassin organization—had actually come in person!
It seemed they were playing for keeps this time.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to remain calm. Masking her internal turmoil with a neutral expression, she gave a simple instruction to her assistant, Xiao Wang: "Tell everyone to leave early tonight. Stay safe."
Although confused, Xiao Wang followed her orders. Duan Fei then signaled to A-Qiang, who understood immediately and promptly deployed additional bodyguards to patrol the interior and exterior of the building. A tense atmosphere permeated the entire company. The employees, unaware of the specifics, sensed something was wrong from their boss’s grave expression and the tightened security; they moved with extreme caution, fearful of making even the slightest mistake.
As night deepened, Duan Fei remained alone in her office. Outside the window, neon lights flickered and traffic flowed endlessly—a city that seemed tranquil but was, in fact, filled with hidden perils.
Suddenly, a black shadow streaked by, fast as lightning!
Duan Fei’s internal alarm bells rang wildly. She spun around just in time to see a man in black standing before her like a phantom.
"Dark Night!" she recognized him at once. Those cold, ruthless eyes were like those of an emissary from hell.
"Miss Duan, it’s been a long time," Dark Night said, his voice low, raspy, and tinged with mockery.
"What do you want?" Duan Fei feigned composure, though her palms were already damp with sweat.
"Your life." Barely had the words left his lips when he lunged at her like a panther.
"Ah!" The nearby employees broke into chaos, their terrified screams echoing through the halls.
A-Qiang reacted swiftly, rushing forward to engage Dark Night in a fierce struggle. However, Dark Night’s combat prowess far surpassed that of the previous assassins. A-Qiang was quickly overpowered, sustaining several bloody gashes.
Terrified by the bloody scene, Duan Fei grabbed an ashtray from her desk and hurled it at Dark Night with all her might. He dodged it with a sidestep and sneered, "Trifling tricks."
He grabbed Duan Fei by the hair and slammed her to the floor. With a dull thud, her head began to ring, and her vision blurred. Dark Night pressed a dagger against her throat; the icy touch made her tremble uncontrollably.
"Farewell, Miss Duan," he whispered, his voice sounding like a death sentence.
Just at that critical, life-or-death moment…
"Stop!" A low, thunderous roar shook the office. A figure dashed in, fast as a lightning bolt, and kicked Dark Night away.
Bei Mo!
Why was he here? Duan Fei was filled with questions, but above all, she felt the relief of a narrow escape.
Bei Mo pulled Duan Fei behind him, his eyes icy as he glared at Dark Night. "You’ve got a death wish if you dare to touch my woman!"
"Your woman?" Dark Night sneered. "President Bei, aren't you overstepping your bounds?"
"My affairs are none of your concern!" Bei Mo’s eyes sharpened like a drawn sword, cold and piercing. He lunged forward, locking into combat with Dark Night.
Bei Mo fought with speed, precision, and ruthlessness. Every move was lethal; he was like a tiger descending from the mountain, his aura overwhelming. Although Dark Night was formidable, he found himself struggling against Bei Mo. He retreated step by step, sustaining injuries along the way.
The surrounding employees watched in stunned silence, as if witnessing an action movie. This was no mere business elite—this was a martial arts master! Xiao Wang, in particular, had stars in her eyes: "Wow! President Bei is so cool! He’s my new idol!"
Duan Fei, too, watched in a daze. She knew Bei Mo was capable, but she hadn’t expected him to be this powerful. This man always managed to surprise her—or perhaps, shock her? Bei Mo’s movements were fluid and graceful, radiating a lethal, magnetic charm. Duan Fei’s heart raced against her will, and a strange sensation began to unfurl within her.
Realizing he was no match for Bei Mo, Dark Night feinted a move and turned to flee. Bei Mo did not give chase. Instead, he walked over to Duan Fei and asked with concern, "Are you alright?"
Duan Fei shook her head, avoiding his gaze. "I’m fine. Thank you."
Seeing her evasiveness, Bei Mo’s heart sank slightly. He knew she was still blaming him. "Duan Fei…" he began, but she cut him off.
"President Bei, if there is nothing else, I will be leaving." She turned and walked away without a moment’s hesitation.
Bei Mo watched her retreating figure, his heart a storm of conflicting emotions. He reached out as if to grab her, then let his hand fall, powerless. He knew he had a long road ahead.
"Sss…" Bei Mo suddenly felt a sharp pain. Looking down, he saw a gash on his arm he hadn't noticed before, blood slowly seeping out.
Hearing his sharp intake of breath, Duan Fei paused. Unable to resist, she turned back. The wound on his arm was shocking; blood was trickling out, making his already pale complexion look even weaker. Her heart tightened. She hurried over, her tone betraying a concern she hadn't realized she felt: "You're hurt. Is it serious?"
Seeing the worry in her eyes, the corners of Bei Mo’s mouth curled upward in a triumphant smile. So, this woman did care about him! He feigned weakness, his voice tinged with a hint of grievance: "It's alright, just a bit painful. Could you take a look for me?" As he spoke, he intentionally held his arm out toward her.
Duan Fei rolled her eyes at him. How could this belly-black, domineering CEO learn to play the victim? Yet, she sighed helplessly and began to examine his wound with care, grumbling, "Honestly, you're a grown man, how can you be so careless?"
"Wasn't it to save you?" Bei Mo retorted with a smile, his tone carrying a trace of imperceptible doting.
Duan Fei looked up at him and caught the uncharacteristically tender look in his eyes. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly averted her gaze, saying with feigned indifference, "Who asked you to save me? I could have handled it myself."
"Fine, fine, you’re the strongest," Bei Mo agreed, his heart blooming with joy. This woman was finally no longer icy toward him; it seemed his quest to win her heart was just around the corner!
The atmosphere between them had shifted subtly due to this small incident, no longer as hostile as before.
The next day, as soon as Duan Fei arrived at the office, Xiao Wang rushed into her office excitedly. "President Duan, good news! We’ve received several major orders from companies as strong as ours! Our company is about to take off!"
Seeing Xiao Wang’s excitement, Duan Fei’s lips curled into a smile. It seemed the decisions she had made were correct; the company’s prospects were bright indeed.
The entire office was filled with joy and high spirits, everyone working with renewed vigor, as if they could already see the company’s beautiful future. To celebrate the surge in performance, Duan Fei decided to host a dinner for everyone that evening.
As the night wore on and people mingled and toasted, the atmosphere was lively. Just as the celebration reached its peak, Duan Fei received an anonymous letter. She opened it to find words written in blood-red ink: *Stay away from Bei Mo, or even greater danger awaits you.*
Duan Fei’s expression darkened, and the smile vanished from her face instantly. Who wanted her to stay away from Bei Mo? Who was pulling the strings behind the scenes? Was it really their business rival, President Li? Or was it someone else?
She stared at the note, her brow furrowed in deep thought. A sense of unease lingered, a premonition that something was about to happen. She looked toward the horizon, her gaze sharp and resolute. No matter what happened next, she would face it calmly and never back down. She gripped the letter tightly, her knuckles turning white as if steeling her resolve.
