Chapter 148: The Leading Role
At seven in the evening, following the head teacher's instructions, Ming Han went to the classroom for the first class meeting.
The head teacher was a handsome, middle-aged man with a flat-top haircut, dressed in a crisp suit, wearing glasses, and standing with military posture. He adjusted his glasses and said to everyone in a deep, resonant voice: "Students, welcome to the Municipal Number One High School. Our goal is very simple: every single student in this class must be at the level of a Tier 985 university or higher three years from now."
The head teacher's speech was overwhelmingly domineering, radiating supreme confidence.
"Every single one of you ranked in the top 150 in the city for the high school entrance exams; not a single person entered through the back door. Based on our school's past standards, one out of every three of you will be accepted by Tsinghua University or Peking University three years from now."
The best class in the best high school in the entire city—Class 8 of Senior Grade 3.
Wang Zhimin below was utterly thrilled. "I had no idea I was such a total badass, haha..."
"That plump student, what are you doing?" The head teacher, noticing Wang Zhimin gesturing wildly over there, called him out.
The plump student? Hearing the head teacher address him like that, the entire class burst into laughter!
Wang Zhimin felt a bit awkward. He stood up and said, "Teacher, I didn't realize I was so exceptional, and I got a bit carried away."
The head teacher nodded. "Don't lack confidence like that; you are indeed very exceptional. Why don't you introduce yourself to the class, student?"
Wang Zhimin took the lead in walking up to the podium and greeted everyone. "My name is Wang Zhimin, and back in junior high, everyone called me Big Mouth. I hope that in the days to come, everyone can learn from me... Ah! No, I mean I will learn from everyone."
This student's comical antics cracked many people up, and everyone applauded frantically.
Wang Zhimin returned to his seat in high spirits and said to Ming Han, "Damn, I just glanced over and saw a super gorgeous beauty, easily a match for your Chen Li."
Ming Han shot a sideways glance at Wang Zhimin. "You vulgar human being, can you stop only thinking about pretty girls? We are here to study, all right?"
Wu Xinhai nodded from nearby. "Brother Wang, you are really going overboard, acting way too desperate. Look at Brother Han, so cool and detached."
Wu Xinhai suddenly felt a surge of admiration for Ming Han. This was what you called a true master! Getting the most badass thing done without anyone even noticing...
Ming Han nodded. "I indeed possess many fine qualities worthy of your emulation." After a brief pause, Ming Han added, "By the way, where is this beauty you were talking about?"
Heh! Wang Zhimin and Wu Xinhai rolled their eyes at Ming Han simultaneously. Cool and detached? My foot!
Wang Zhimin pointed toward the front row. Sure enough, she possessed a killer back view.
"As soon as class is over, I'm going to go make friends with her," Wang Zhimin declared, his mind made up. "No one is allowed to snatch her from me. Otherwise, our friendship is over."
Heh! Just this morning when they first met, he was claiming that the bonds of classmates were higher than the heavens and deeper than the seas! Now, for the sake of a girl, the little boat of friendship capsized without a moment's hesitation.
After giving a few more instructions, the head teacher said to everyone, "I'll leave the rest of the time to you all to get acquainted with one another."
Wang Zhimin had been waiting precisely for those words. The moment the head teacher stepped out of the classroom, Wang Zhimin bolted like an arrow shot from a bow toward the owner of that killer back view.
"Hi classmate, my name is Wang Zhimin. Please take good care of me from now on!"
Ming Han and the others held their breath, filled with eager anticipation.
Was she a goddess of tofu or just mapo tofu?
The girl turned her head and smiled politely. "Hello! My name is Deng Qingqing."
Uh, Ming Han froze in place!
Deng Qingqing stood up and looked at Ming Han. "What's wrong? Don't you recognize me anymore?"
Ming Han forced a bitter smile. "How are you!"
He had previously heard Lin Jingjing talk about how Deng Qingqing possessed fair skin, stunning looks, and top-tier grades, and now it turned out to be entirely true.
"Ming Han, from now on we're classmates. I hope you can carry on the noble virtue of taking pleasure in helping others and treat me to meals and milk tea whenever you have free time."
Ming Han spread his hands. "It's only the first day, and you're already shaking me down like this?"
Wang Zhimin was speechless. How could Ming Han be so utterly clueless about romance? What was wrong with treating a beauty to some milk tea?
He asked Ming Han, "You guys knew each other before?"
"Same junior high."
Wang Zhimin widened his eyes. "Holy crap, did you guys hire a master of feng shui for that junior high school plot of land? It seems to exclusively churn out beauties."
Ming Han replied with a faint smile, "There are plenty of handsome guys, too."
...
At that moment, Deng Qingqing called out to everyone, "We're all classmates now. How about we all head out for a KTV party tonight?"
A usually rather obedient top student shyly stood up. "That's going too far! How heartbroken would the head teacher be if he found out? We are the best class; we have to set a good example for the other classes!"
Heh! Deng Qingqing, Wang Zhimin, and the others looked at this top student with utter contempt...
Wang Zhimin was the most direct. "Brothers, answer my call and Qingqing's call, and let's just go. Don't be cowards."
The various top students had initially felt a bit reserved, but upon hearing those words, they immediately shoved their backpacks straight into their desk drawers. "Let's go! Let's go sing for our youth!"
The entire classroom emptied out in an instant!
Meanwhile, the other classes were still just chatting inside their classrooms...
After all, it was their first day at the Municipal Number One High School, and they didn't dare act too lawless yet, so they could only discuss whether or not to go out for a late-night snack after class.
At that moment, someone rushed in through the door, yelling, "Holy shit, the entire Class 8 just went out to party, their whole classroom is empty."
Everyone was dumbfounded. Not a single person had expected the first ones to slip away to be that elite class of top scholars.
"Brothers! What the hell are we afraid of? Let's hit the bars!"
"Work hard, play hard! What a great example Class 8 has set for us!"
"It's one thing to lose to Class 8 in studying, but if we lose to them in partying too, that would just be too humiliating."
And so, this class emptied out in a flash as well...
On their way out, they even poked their heads into the classrooms of other classes.
"What are you pretending to be top students for? Class 8 has already gone off to party."
As soon as they heard that Class 8 had gone wild, everyone instantly felt as if they'd been injected with adrenaline, organizing their entire classes to head out to KTVs or bars.
In the blink of an eye, the lights across two entire floors of the teaching building went dark.
...
Meanwhile, the Director of Discipline and the Principal were strolling together to inspect the freshman grade level.
The Director of Discipline beamed with pride. "Principal, the students in this year's cohort can truly be described as crouching tigers and hidden dragons. Especially that Class 8—I gave their head teacher strict, non-negotiable orders to produce enough Tsinghua and Peking University students to fill half the class."
The Principal looked very satisfied. "It seems our school is about to become a myth like Hengshui High."
The two of them walked happily toward the teaching building, only to find that the entire freshman floor was pitch black...
"Where are the people?" The Director of Discipline was dumbfounded. "Where did all the freshmen go?"
A sophomore student walking past casually snitched, "Word is they all ran off to party."
The Director of Discipline nearly saw stars and almost fainted on the spot!
"Principal, it's fine. Elite classes like Class 8 surely wouldn't be that wild."
The sophomore student added fuel to the fire: "Word is that Class 8 led the whole thing."
The Director of Discipline nearly dropped dead right then and there...
