When facing Miao Ke Song, Han Ji always seemed to be missing a vital piece of understanding in his mind. Whenever he was with her, he exuded the full force of a domineering CEO—as if afraid that anyone would doubt how much he cared for her. Looking at this news, one would wonder why he couldn’t just be a little more low-key; was he afraid that Pingting Lin wouldn’t be able to find Miao Ke Song otherwise? Zihan Su shook his head with a sigh, utterly at a loss for words to vent his frustrations.

Miao Ke Song had even quarreled with Han Ji over the bodyguard incident. She was just an ordinary person, and having so many bodyguards following her to work every day put immense pressure on her. “Han Ji! Can you be normal for once? I have to go to work. Bringing all these bodyguards to the office makes everyone look at me differently.” The thought of her colleagues’ judgmental gazes made her heart ache. Some who didn’t get along with her even spread rumors that she was just a gold-digger. Now rumors about her were everywhere in the company; even the boss held a grudge against her.

“Then don’t go to work for a while,” Han Ji said, already wanting her to quit the company. After hearing Zihan Su’s words, he had thought it over many times recently and found them increasingly reasonable. Pingting Lin had vanished without a trace; no one, not even the police, had any clue where she had gone or what means she had used to disappear. For someone like her, with nothing left, no one knew what lengths she might go to in order to exact revenge on society. It was better to be cautious in all matters.

Hearing Han Ji suggest she should stay home, Miao Ke Song found him utterly unreasonable. She knew he never liked her working; he just wanted her to stay home with him every day. But she was an independent woman—how could she follow him around every moment? She loved her job dearly. Though she had minor conflicts with some colleagues, it was nothing serious. This life made her feel fulfilled. Now she strongly suspected that his talk of danger and the army of bodyguards were just excuses to stop her from going to work.

“Han Ji, there’s no way I’m not going to work. I don’t need all these bodyguards. We live in a society governed by law—what danger could there be?” Miao Ke Song said coldly, “Tomorrow, I don’t want to see any of your bodyguards. I just want to live peacefully as an ordinary person.”

After speaking, she went upstairs and didn’t forget to lock her door behind her. Han Ji’s expression stiffened like ice, and the air around him seemed to freeze solid. Why couldn’t she understand? He was only doing this for her own good! If he truly didn’t want her working, he could have just bought out her small, struggling company—the boss would’ve been glad to sell. But he hadn’t done that. Although he disliked that Miao Ke Song ran herself ragged for such a small salary, seeing her happy at work, he let it be.

This time, however, he was genuinely worried about her safety. Though he disliked her working, his greater concern was for her well-being. Han Ji leaned back on the sofa, rubbing his temples irritably, with no outlet for the frustration burning inside him.

Miao Ke Song didn’t sleep all night. The next morning, she ignored Han Ji completely. He wanted to say something but saw she wouldn’t even meet his gaze. “No need to make breakfast for me. I’m heading to work,” she said to Aunt Li in the kitchen before leaving, never once glancing at Han Ji.

Han Ji was so furious he nearly crushed the cup in his hand. None of the house staff dared utter a word; even the slightest noise felt deafening in the tense silence. Without the familiar black-clad bodyguards in sight, Miao Ke Song finally breathed a sigh of relief—today, she could live like a normal person.

Riding her little electric scooter down the sidewalk, she caught the malicious glare of a disheveled woman with a haggard face and yellowish complexion. Pingting Lin’s twisted smile crept across her features as she watched Miao Ke Song alone. After waiting so many days, she finally saw her target out by herself.

Originally, her first target was Zihan Su—if not for him, she wouldn’t have ended up like this! But that wily Su was far too cautious: either he didn’t leave the house or was always accompanied by a swarm of bodyguards. She had even tried sneaking into the residential complex where Su lived, hoping to strike at his home. To gain entry, she followed a large, ugly pig of a man who was a resident there.

Yet once inside, she found no opportunity to act. Even when Su went out to the local supermarket within the complex, bodyguards shadowed him. Rumor had it that twenty-four hours a day, guards watched over his home, complete with surveillance.

In the end, she had to give up and find a new target. She couldn’t get close to Han Ji, so her next target could only be Miao Ke Song. That woman was foolish and naive—she didn’t understand why Han Ji had eyes for her. Noticing Miao Ke Song’s annoyance with the bodyguards, Pingting Lin guessed they would argue over them and that Miao Ke Song would try to get rid of them. Today, she finally had her chance. Ha ha ha!

Watching Miao Ke Song’s retreating figure, Pingting Lin ground her teeth and hissed viciously, “Soon. If I don’t have peace, neither will you. If I die, you’ll come with me!”

Miao Ke Song arrived at her company, surprising her colleagues. One coworker who disliked her feigned astonishment: “Hey, where are your bodyguards? Did you fire them?”

Miao Ke Song forced a tight smile but said nothing. This man had helped her when she first joined the company and had even courted her, but she rejected him. Perhaps out of spite, he had since made it his mission to antagonize her, always sneering and mocking her, though nothing too serious.

Seeing her ignore him, he scoffed and turned away. What was there to be proud of? A woman who only cared about money—so what if she was attached to a wealthy man? Judging by her clothes, she probably didn’t get much from him anyway.

Not long after, Miao Ke Song received a call saying her ordered milk tea had arrived. The number was unfamiliar, and the delivery woman’s voice trembled with nervous excitement.

“Sorry, you must be mistaken—I didn’t order any milk tea,” Miao Ke Song replied, certain she hadn’t.

The woman said, “Ms. Song, this is definitely your milk tea. Your boyfriend, Mr. Ji, ordered it for you.”

Hidden outside Miao Ke Song’s company, Pingting Lin’s hands trembled with excitement. She had bought the phone number with money she had to be careful spending, as she dared not use any of her own belongings. But thankfully, she still had some cash on hand. Buying this SIM card, she had been waiting for this very day.
