Chapter 29: The Su Family, a Household Devoid of Manners

Meanwhile, the Tang family were still dreaming sweetly when they received the news.
After a fall like that, it would have been strange if anyone had survived.
“We absolutely must have a good drink tonight. Whatever you do, don’t let the old man find out. Make sure everyone keeps it from him.”
The group laughed without the slightest trace of conscience. The ugliness of human nature was laid bare in them.
The Ji, Song, and Su families had initially assumed that the victims were surely dead. The heads of all three families were rushing over when, to their surprise, the police told them that the four were still alive.
“They’re still alive? Are you sure they’re all right?” Mrs. Ji’s eyes were swollen from crying.
The police reassured her, “They’re alive, and all four of them are fine. They even called the police themselves.”
A search team had already been dispatched, and it would probably not be long before they could rescue them.
They had called the police themselves? If they knew how to call the police, why hadn’t they thought to call home and let everyone know they were safe?
The parents’ fists instantly clenched.
At the bottom of the cliff, the four people having a picnic simultaneously shivered.
The incident quickly made the news. None of the people in the car had ordinary backgrounds, but the culprit looked so honest and harmless that even the most imaginative conspiracy theorists could not come up with anything substantial.
That very afternoon, Su Zhihan and the others were rescued. Not one of them had even torn their clothes. When the police arrived, they were sitting on the ground, dozing.
Anyone who did not know better might have thought they were out having a picnic.
It was also the first time Su Zhihan had met the parents of this body.
Her parents looked rather nervous. When they saw that she was unhurt, they both let out a sigh of relief.
Thank goodness. She was alive.
Their feelings toward this daughter were complicated. It was impossible to say they did not care about her, but neither could they grow close to her.
Mrs. Su patted Su Zhihan on the shoulder, her voice unusually gentle. “As long as you’re not hurt. We’ll transfer some money to you later. Your father and I still have some matters to deal with, so go to the hospital yourself and get checked out. We’ll be leaving first.”
Su Zhihan waved casually. Go on, then.
In any case, they had no affection between them. A financial relationship was enough; there was no need for anything more sentimental.
The state of their family left everyone else dumbfounded. They knew the Su family’s parent-child relationships were poor, but they had never imagined they could be this bad.

Mrs. Ji gazed at Su Zhihan, her eyes full of pity.
With neither fatherly love nor maternal affection, how miserable this child must feel inside.
Su Zhihan, who supposedly had neither fatherly love nor maternal affection: Ha! I’ve made another fortune!
The next step was investigating the accident. Ji Han and Song Yu handled it, leaving Su Zhihan with nothing to worry about.
The culprit looked honest, but he was actually a compulsive gambler.
The Tang family had given him a large sum of money to carry out the deed. If he succeeded, not only could he repay his gambling debts, he would also be assured a comfortable life for the rest of his days.
Gamblers had no conscience to speak of. As long as they were paid, they would do anything.
Ji Han and Song Yu began their investigation at once. The younger members of the Tang family had left traces here and there when they acted. Unlike the old man, they were not nearly as shrewd, so it was easy to seize upon their loose ends.
Once they found the evidence, they handed it directly to the police.
The Tang family was in complete chaos, especially those who had taken part.
They had thought the matter was already settled, never imagining that the investigation would lead back to them so quickly.
When the culprits were arrested, the old man was still completely in the dark.
After learning what his grandchildren had done, the old man was so enraged that he was sent straight to the hospital.
When Su Zhihan heard the news, she could only think that the old man deserved it.
Their family had set such a terrible example. No wonder all their descendants had grown crooked.
If Song Yu and Ji Han had not stopped her, she would have gone to the hospital to see Old Master Tang and ask him how exactly he had raised his descendants.
Song Yu was truly at a loss with this woman. “Could you please calm down for once? Leave this to the two of us. We’re the victims here. If you go to the hospital and happen to anger him to death, we won’t have the moral high ground anymore.”
Ji Han went so far as to order Song Yu to keep a close eye on Su Zhihan and make absolutely sure she stayed put.
“Can you two stop watching me like I’m a thief? Am I really that incapable of controlling myself?” Su Zhihan protested indignantly.
Ji Han and Song Yu answered in unison, “Aren’t you?”
If this reckless girl had any sense of restraint, then there would be no such thing as an unreasonable person in the world.
With that mouth of hers alone, she could drive the two of them to death, let alone an eighty-year-old man lying in a hospital bed.

Su Zhihan: …Weren’t we supposed to be friends? None of you are on my side! This is infuriating!
The scandal involving the Tang family became enormous, even bigger than the trouble that had engulfed the Lin family last time.
Ji Han and Song Yu even dug up everything the Tang family had done over the past several years.
If they wanted someone dead, they should first consider whether they had the strength to do it. Without that strength, they had better be prepared to be destroyed instead.
Old Master Tang lay in the hospital, still forced to worry about his unfilial children and grandchildren. He wanted to meet Ji Han and Song Yu, but they refused him outright.
In the end, he could only set his sights on Su Zhihan.
Su Zhihan had been worried that she would never get the chance to curse someone out.
When Old Master Tang called her, she immediately launched into him.
“You want me to plead for mercy? You want me to forgive your grandchildren? Dream on, old man!”
“Your grandchildren wanted us dead. If someone wanted you dead, would you let them off?”
Old Master Tang coughed several times, his lungs seeming to tear apart, before pleading in a low voice, “Our family was certainly in the wrong this time, but the children are still young. You can’t ruin all their lives over this.”
“Besides, nothing happened to you, did it? They say fighting is how people become acquainted. Can’t you just treat this as a joke?”
Su Zhihan had seen shameless people before, but never one so shameless at such an advanced age. She actually burst out laughing when she heard him.
“I called you Old Master only out of respect, but now you deserve to be called nothing more than an old fossil! And don’t say that nothing happened to us. If something really had happened, we would be dead.”
“Old fossil, since you insist this was only a joke, then I’ll gladly play along. I hope your grandchildren can withstand the joke I have in mind!”
She had not intended to get involved personally, but now she was determined to see how this joke would play out.
On the other end of the line, Old Master Tang was so furious that his eyes nearly rolled back in his head.
Was this how the Su family had taught their daughter? Calling an old man an old fossil at every turn—what appalling manners!
In a rage, Old Master Tang called Su Zhihan’s parents to complain. He appealed both to their family ties and to their business interests, hoping they would help persuade her.
Mrs. Su said, “She called you an old fossil? That’s perfectly normal. Sometimes she calls her father and me old fogeys too.”
“Old fossil—oh, I mean, Old Master, we truly can’t help you with this. She’s our only daughter. If anything had really happened to her, the matter would have been far more serious than this.”
Old Master Tang: …Not one person in this family has any manners!
