Chapter 94: The Sun Family’s Plot

When Chu Yuxi acted like a little girl, she was an absolute delight to behold.

From the moment they entered the club, Shen An had been observing everything. Using his Clairvoyant Eye, he watched the club manager who had just left. After leaving, the manager quickly entered a room where a young man was waiting. This young man was Sun Li’s son, Sun Wu, the grandson of the family head.

The two exchanged a few words before the manager left again. By reading their lips, Shen An was able to grasp the gist of their conversation. Don’t doubt it—at Shen An’s current level, picking up sign language was a breeze. Even though he couldn’t hear the words, he still understood their content.

“Young master, Shen An has arrived.”
“What’s he here for?”
“He brought Chu Yuxi with him. They’re just sitting there, chatting.”
“Keep a close eye on him. Grandfather will make his move soon. Watch what he does and report back immediately.”

Shen An smiled faintly. The Sun family was certainly bold—he hadn’t expected them to dare target him. Meanwhile, Chu Yuxi was happily chatting with Shen An. After a while, Shen An got up to leave, intending to take Chu Yuxi to eat street food.

“Wow, are you really taking me to eat street food? I’ve heard it’s not very clean!”

“The truly delicious things can’t be found here,” Shen An replied, offering no further explanation. When they went to pay, the manager told them there was no need.

“Well, thank you,” Shen An said, not bothering to ask why. Free things were always welcome. Besides, the Sun family—well, their days were numbered. Since those above insisted on plotting against him, Shen An was not made of clay, to be trampled and manipulated as they pleased. Now that he knew their intentions, there was no reason not to strike first.

As evening approached, the two arrived at a small eatery. Outside the shop, there were two stands grilling skewers.

“Boss, ten lamb skewers and ten beef skewers,” Shen An ordered.

The shop owner replied cheerfully.

“You seem so familiar with this,” Chu Yuxi said, settling herself a bit shyly. At first, she hesitated to sit because the seats looked dirty, but seeing how unconcerned Shen An was—and how much he enjoyed eating there—she relented and took a seat beside him.

Chu Yuxi hesitated for a moment, then decided to sit down just like Shen An. This seemed to be her first time eating street food with someone, leaving her with an indescribable feeling—part curiosity, part nervousness, and perhaps a bit of anticipation.

She watched Shen An as the owner approached. Most street food vendors were run by one or two people—sometimes friends, more often couples.

“Hey, brother, want some lamb kidneys? They’re the real deal,” the owner said with a smile.

“Sure, give me some—not overcooked,” Shen An replied.

Chu Yuxi, curious at their exchange, said, “I want some too.”

The owner looked at Shen An, a bit taken aback.

“What’s the matter? Aren’t you here to show me good food? I want to try it too.”

“Alright, grill a few more,” Shen An instructed.

They proceeded to order more—squid, grilled fish, grilled gluten, and just about everything else on the menu. Shen An even ordered a serving of stinky tofu.

To someone like Chu Yuxi, raised as the darling of a wealthy family, stinky tofu was an entirely foreign concept—especially its pungent aroma. But Shen An was unfazed by her complaints.

“This is really delicious—smells bad, tastes amazing,” he said.

“No way, I’m not eating that,” Chu Yuxi protested, pinching her nose and refusing even to inhale the scent.

Shen An picked up a piece with a skewer and popped it into his mouth, savoring it contentedly.

“Mmm, so good.”

“Miss, this is really tasty—you see how much your boyfriend is enjoying it? Lots of people love my stinky tofu,” the owner called out while busy over his grill.

“Who’s his girlfriend?!” Chu Yuxi blushed, shooting Shen An a glare. Yet her curiosity got the better of her, and she eyed the stinky tofu on the table.

“Is it really that good?” she asked uncertainly.

Shen An nodded gently.

After hesitating a moment, Chu Yuxi picked one up and put it in her mouth. She closed her eyes, chewed, and suddenly her eyes lit up. “It really is delicious!”

“Hey, don’t eat it all—leave some for me,” she suddenly cried, realizing Shen An was steadily devouring the rest.

They ate a great deal, even trying a few lamb kidneys. However, Chu Yuxi found the kidneys unpalatable and, after trying one, refused to eat another. Shen An simply smiled at her reaction.

He had a healthy appetite, and it was a rare occasion for him to indulge in such fare—he felt a bit nostalgic. In the past, he often ate street food and spicy hotpot with Sun Ming; many of his old friends, though, had long since drifted away.

As they were eating, three people suddenly approached—two men and a woman. A plump man led the way, followed by the woman, while the last man lagged a step behind. Night had already fallen, and it was clear the trio had just come from the bar next door. Having just settled his tab, the man now had little money left.

Yan Kai patted his pockets and sighed. He reached out for the woman ahead of him—his girlfriend, her face caked with makeup and bold lipstick. She jerked her hand away.

“What are you doing?”

“Rou Rou, do you have any money? Let me borrow some,” Yan Kai said awkwardly.

“Are you kidding? Asking me for money? I don’t have any,” she retorted, with no intention of helping.

“Rou Rou, I just gave you two thousand today, and you bought so much makeup yesterday—I haven’t even said anything,” he murmured, clearly not wanting others to hear.

“You call yourself a man, asking a woman for money? Why can’t you find a way yourself? Don’t come to me. If you keep this up, we’re breaking up,” she declared coldly, without a shred of shame.

He’d spent so much on her, but now, in his hour of need, she was utterly unreliable. Even yesterday, knowing he’d need money for socializing today, she’d still demanded two thousand for cosmetics.

Their families had already met, and they were close to marrying; Yan Kai had thought about breaking up, but he truly liked her.

Yan Kai sighed again. The company was laying off staff, and he’d already learned he was on the chopping block. The man ahead could help him through this crisis—a contact he’d managed to secure with great effort. For some reason, when his girlfriend found out, she insisted on coming along. Yan Kai had no choice but to let her.

What bothered him was that, in the bar earlier, she quickly became intimate with that man after only a few words. From what he knew, the man was a department manager at Future Group—one of the four giants in Silver City, a company with tremendous clout. Even a modest manager from there wielded impressive influence; it was almost hard to believe.
