Chapter One Hundred and Eight: West Gate City, Part Two
At dawn, all the assassins gathered on the top floor of a high-rise building. Standing at the highest point was none other than the boss himself. Qianyin, who stood in front, stared at him intently, her pupils widening.
“I am not one of the building assassins. From now on, the assassins’ world is under my control. If any of you want to leave, I will let you go without hesitation. I have rebuilt the hidden sanctuary. If anyone wishes to remain in this line of work, you must first reach an agreement with us.”
As he spoke, each person below had a different thought in mind.
Last night, Lengxue and Han had already more or less guessed that this would be the outcome, and Dong, Nan, Xi, and Bei had sensed it to some degree as well. But Qianyin knew nothing at all. She looked at this man, then at the unfamiliar crowd behind him.
Only one thought came to her mind: this was a trap from the start. He had no intention of letting her leave, did he? A brilliant scheme indeed.
Seeing that everyone below remained silent, the boss continued, “All of you will fight one on one. In the end, the last victor will become my right hand, working with me to govern the assassins’ world. Those who want to leave may do so now, but from this moment on you may never set foot in this world again, nor reveal its secrets. I will give you thirty minutes to consider.”
Qianyin clenched her fists. To be honest, she had planned to leave the assassins’ world only after this man died. But now that he had become its master, what was she to do? Should she leave now?
The boss said nothing more and turned to gaze at the boundless sky. He would give these humans enough time to let the darkness in their hearts rise to the surface, then follow him and help him accomplish a great undertaking.
Today he ruled over only this small assassins’ world, with barely three thousand people. But if one day he ruled the whole world, there would be tens of thousands, millions, even billions. Was not this tiny opening proof of his success?
Thinking of this, a sinister smile crept across the boss’s lips.
Time passed minute by minute, yet no one stepped forward to leave. No one turned and walked away.
Dong, Nan, Xi, and Bei stepped out. Looking at the group of strangers, they no longer wished to remain assassins. This world was too dark. Every one of those people had killing intent in their eyes; they were not suited to stay with them.
Qianyin turned and watched the four little ones leave, letting out a breath. They were gone, but that did not mean she was safe.
Everyone watched the four depart, except the boss. Hearing that someone had left, he frowned slightly. Though displeased, he still did not turn around to look.
Qianyin glanced at Lengxue. She wanted to leave now too. Her money was enough, and she no longer wanted to kill. As long as she dealt with the man before her, she would go into seclusion. Once the boss was dead, the world’s evil would gradually shrink back to its original form.
Qianyin walked up to Lengxue, took his hand, and the two of them exchanged a slight smile and nodded before preparing to leave. But someone would not let them go.
The ones who stopped them were the three thousand people. On their faces were expressions of respect, disappointment, and suspicion. Today, none of them wore masks. Every face was strikingly clean and youthful. In their eyes there was emptiness, coldness, and bloodlust.
Each of them had been stained by blood, and none wore a smile. Suddenly seeing these two smiling made it feel unbearably harsh. The two of them stood at the very front, which meant they were first and second in the assassins’ world, and yet they were simply leaving. Everyone was disappointed.
“Move aside. We are leaving the assassins’ world.”
Seeing the people blocking their way, Qianyin’s eyes held no warmth at all, and her icy words came out without hesitation. If these people insisted on stopping them, then since a fight would be inevitable someday anyway, she might as well settle it now.
The boss still paid them no mind. He simply gazed at the sky, leaving these matters to the three thousand below. For the time being, he would not make a move against Qianyin. He did not believe himself so formidable that he could kill her alone, much less everyone standing behind her.
Those people stood motionless, saying nothing, yet they still would not move aside. Han also withdrew and stood beside the boss, with no intention of concerning himself with this matter. If they truly dared lay a hand on Qianyin, he would probably step in to help her.
“Get lost,” Lengxue said coldly. For anyone blocking the two of them, he would truly kill without mercy.
A large number of people stepped back, leaving only the two rows in the middle prepared to surround them. Though they did not intend to strike with lethal force and only wanted to keep them here, in a fight between experts, injury and death were unavoidable.
Qianyin always carried the whip Lengxue had given her. At this moment, she was full of fearless authority as she drew it out, ready to unleash carnage. These people who blocked her would not know how formidable she was until they died by her hand.
The six daggers in Lengxue’s hands were poised at all times to take lives. The four-leaf clover hanging at his neck gleamed in the sunlight, exquisitely beautiful. Its jade-green color seemed almost alive.
Quite a few were intimidated by the overbearing presence of the two of them. Indeed, those who stood at the top of the rankings were never people others could catch up to. Since they had chosen to leave the assassins’ world, they would have to defeat everyone present to do it; otherwise, letting them go would leave the others deeply unsettled.
The two rows of people were already preparing to settle the matter with their fists, all of them lunging at the pair. Every one of them attacked with full force, holding nothing back. At this rate, injuries were inevitable.
Han wanted to step forward and help. He could not bear to watch so many people attack Qianyin alone. If Qianyin were to fall before his eyes like this, how heartbroken would he be? He would probably go mad in the end and slaughter everyone here.
“I won’t take their lives, but if you dare go out there, you’ll be the first to fall here.”
The boss blocked Han’s path and tossed out those words in a cold voice. He had planned all of this from the beginning; it was not merely to summon everyone here.
After hearing this, Han no longer bothered with the others and ran straight down the stairs. Everyone gave way to him, still showing him great respect.
When Han reached the ground below, he found the four little ones still waiting there. He had wanted to say something, but in the end he simply walked past them without a word.
He only hoped they would all come through safely. If he said anything, those four would probably rush up as well, and then even more people would be hurt.
Qianyin’s whip lashed out again and again with increasing ferocity, striking the others. Those people could not even get close to her, while Lengxue guarded her back at every moment. Though they could not reach the two of them and could not harm them, both of them had limited stamina.
Qianyin and Lengxue forced the crowd back, but as their opponents kept increasing in number, the pair were eventually driven into a corner against a wall. They looked down once. If they jumped, the chance of survival was very small.
The two of them met each other’s eyes, caught between jumping and taking some injury, or staying here and forcing their way through until they were finally captured.
Qianyin did not choose to jump. She chose to hold on. But Lengxue, unable to withstand the pressure, was suddenly shoved over the edge. Qianyin collapsed into unconsciousness, her mind flooded with the memory of Lengxue being pushed down.
