Chapter Twenty-Three: Wan'er
After being discharged from the hospital, Zixuan Wang made a visit to the orphanage and stopped in front of a little girl. She was as adorable as a porcelain doll, yet her eyes were a dull gray, utterly devoid of life.
Zixuan Wang asked, “What’s your name, little one?”
The girl replied, “My name is Wan’er. Do you know Wan’er, sister?”
Zixuan Wang smiled, “Yes, we met a long time ago. What happened to your eyes?”
Wan’er answered, “I don’t know. Ever since I can remember, I’ve never been able to see.”
Zixuan Wang said gently, “Do you want to be able to see? I can help you.”
Wan’er nodded eagerly, “Really? That would be wonderful.”
Zixuan Wang opened a small bottle and took out something transparent. With a flash of golden light in her hand, she waved it before Wan’er’s eyes. Instantly, the gray pupils turned jet-black and clear. Wan’er’s expression shifted from blankness to a radiant smile, though her shyness lingered after years of blindness.
Zixuan Wang softly rubbed Wan’er’s cheek. “Your eyes are healed now. I should be going.”
Wan’er asked, “Will I see you again?”
Zixuan Wang smiled slightly. “Yes, someday we will meet again.”
Wan’er had more she wanted to say, but simply nodded instead. After leaving the orphanage, Zixuan Wang went straight back to the supermarket. She grabbed some snacks and a few cans of beer and headed into her office. Sitting by the window, she gazed at the view and sipped her drink. She’d barely begun when someone knocked at the door.
Zixuan Wang called out, “Who is it? Come in, the door’s not locked.”
A beautiful woman walked in.
Zixuan Wang didn’t turn around. “What is it?”
Weiwei said, “Sister, you seemed upset. I wanted to see if you needed anything.”
Zixuan Wang replied, “No, I don’t. If there’s nothing else, you can leave.”
Weiwei persisted, “Why don’t I join you for a drink?”
Zixuan Wang snorted, “You? Forget it. Don’t drink too much or you’ll show your true form and scare everyone.”
Weiwei protested, “Why are you always annoyed with me? What did I do wrong? In terms of work, I’m the top performer at Supermarket No. 444. I carry out orders better than anyone! I even took a bullet for you. What more do you want?”
Zixuan Wang said, “Just leave for now. I know what you mean, but it’s impossible.”
Weiwei demanded, “Is it because of Tangtang? She’s already betrayed you! Are you still thinking about her?”
Zixuan Wang snapped, “Are you done yet? You’re just colleagues to me. Don’t overthink it. If you keep talking nonsense, I’ll kick you down from the second floor!”
Weiwei stormed out in anger, and after going downstairs, she made a mysterious phone call. No one knew who she called.
Meanwhile, Zixuan Wang kept drinking alone, bottle after bottle. Eventually, she fell asleep leaning against the glass, the passage of time unknown.
In her dream, she was being hunted by a group of people. At her most helpless moment, someone—her closest person—stood before her, shielding her from harm. Seeing that familiar back, Zixuan Wang’s lips curled into a sweet smile.
Her rescuer, the big sister she could talk to about anything, always arrived just in time. Even as the nightmare unfolded, a voice echoed in her ear, growing ever more urgent.
She rubbed her eyes and picked up her phone. Good grief—it was her big sister. She’d just dreamt of her saving the day, and now she called, surely to cause trouble.
She answered, “Big sister, what are your orders? Speak.”
The Lord of the Underworld replied, “Come over here. I have a mission for you. It’s too complicated to explain over the phone, but it could turn out to be something great for you.”
