Chapter Fifty-Two: Another Fright
Hao Yingjun stood in front of the merchandise, feeling at a loss.
Wang Zixuan called out, "Come on out!"
Hao Yingjun replied, "Sis, I really didn't expect your interests to be so wide-ranging. I'm truly impressed. Maybe I should just excuse myself."
He turned to leave, but just then, a gentle yet chilling voice stopped him.
Dr. Bai emerged from a corner, leaning gracefully against the counter beside Wang Zixuan, gazing at Hao Yingjun with a bewitching look that sent shivers down his spine. It wasn’t that Dr. Bai was frightening—quite the opposite. She was actually rather beautiful. But the memory of her threatening to crack his skull open the other day was so vivid and horrifying that it unsettled him deeply.
Hao Yingjun stammered, "Sis, I've only just arrived here, so I'm bound to make a few mistakes. There might be some small disagreements. You can't just go to such extremes over little issues! All I did was question the serious consequences of asphyxiation, and now you want to open up my head? That really doesn’t fit your generous personality!"
Dr. Bai laughed. "Look how scared the new guy is! You didn’t even tell him what we’re doing here."
With that, she walked leisurely to a shelf and pressed a button on one of the products. A hidden door slowly opened. Without another word, she disappeared inside. Wang Zixuan shot Hao Yingjun a glance and went in after her, grinning, leaving him bewildered. What on earth was going on? Still, he hesitated, too intimidated to follow. The psychological shadow of what he'd heard still loomed over him. Wang Zixuan reappeared at the door, looking at him.
"Are you coming in or not?" she called.
Nervously, Hao Yingjun trailed after her.
Inside, the two walls were lined with shelves, each holding jars of various sizes. On one wall, there was a large X-ray viewer. In the center stood an operating table draped in a white sheet, with a bloodstain around the head area. Curious, Hao Yingjun edged closer to see what kind of creature lay beneath. As he bent over, Wang Zixuan, who had just taken a bottle of water from the fridge, caught sight of him.
"What are you looking at?" she asked.
Dr. Bai, now wearing a white coat, glanced back. "Nothing worth seeing. That’s just a snake spirit. There was a little mishap during a tooth extraction—it sprayed itself in the face with its own venom. It died in a rather gruesome way, wasn't even whole, and its face was ruined. Want to take a look?"
Hao Yingjun frantically waved his hands. "No, no, thank you. I really don’t need to see that."
Looking at Dr. Bai again, now that he wasn’t afraid, he realized she was actually quite attractive.
He asked, "May I ask your name?"
Dr. Bai showed him her work badge. Good grief, she was the head of the medical station. That sounded impressive, though he hadn’t seen any other helpers around.
Hao Yingjun extended his hand. "Hello, Chief Bai."
Dr. Bai shook his hand with a smile. "Just call me Bai."
Wang Zixuan chimed in, "Dr. Bai, Little Bai."
Dr. Bai took the asphyxiation sample from Hao Yingjun’s hand.
She said, "If you have time in the future, be sure to support my business."
Hao Yingjun paused, then nodded. "No problem. The word 'friend' is already etched into my heart. As long as you don’t cut open my head, I’ll sing your praises to everyone I meet."
Dr. Bai nodded and took the sample for testing, leaving Hao Yingjun and Wang Zixuan to wait.
Hao Yingjun asked, "Hey, sis, what kind of class is this, anyway?"
Wang Zixuan turned and glared at him. "Why are you poking your nose into everything? Go and clean that bottle out properly."
