Chapter 138: Molan Makes Amends
Lord Mo had no face to stay here. He only gave a slight nod before turning away, his figure retreating with a hint of melancholy—yet no one cared to console him. After all, he was merely a sorrowful father.
The four—Dong, Nan, Xi, and Bei—stood nearby watching without offering to help clean up. Immortal Elder, having calmed down, sat quietly aside, neither drinking nor watching, simply closing his eyes in silence.
Mo Lan was not always the pampered young lady of the Mo family; these tasks were quite easy and natural for her. She cleaned swiftly and thoroughly, leaving no trace of dirt or disorder.
She sent a servant to fetch a new basin to prepare for planting medicinal herbs, returning the soil to its place. Focusing intently, she carefully replanted the herbs and watered them tenderly. By the time she finished, night had already fallen.
Seeing Immortal Elder still upset, Mo Lan spoke gently, “Immortal Elder, please don’t be angry. The herbs have been brewed; even if we must leave, there’s no rush right now. Qian Yin still needs to take her medicine.”
Dong stepped forward, carrying a cup of warm herbal soup, handing it to Mo Lan. “We’re not like the Mo family. We know how to take care of Sister Qian Yin.”
Mo Lan gave an embarrassed smile but paid it no mind. Indeed, the recent actions of the Mo family had been excessive. Taking the soup without even tidying her disheveled appearance, she headed straight for Qian Yin’s room.
Her steps were steady, and though the way she carried the medicine resembled that of a maid, her demeanor was dignified, rivaling that of any grand lady. Seeing Mo Lan so concerned for Qian Yin, the others' anger gradually softened.
Immortal Elder sighed deeply. These four children were the most outstanding and beloved he had ever known. Now, one was dead and another unconscious. How could he not grieve? Though most of the blame lay with An Feng and Mo Lan, he still cared deeply for those two children as well.
Dong, Nan, Xi, and Bei followed Mo Lan to watch over Qian Yin, hoping she would recover soon. The splendor of this world awaited her; she deserved to see it again. Whether to remain with the Mo family or not was a decision for Qian Yin alone. Wherever she wished to go, they would follow her loyally, never parting.
When Mo Lan opened the door, she noticed the medicine bowls outside had not been cleaned up and brought them into the room. The room was quiet, and the person on the bed remained in a deep sleep, refusing to wake or open her eyes to see those who cared for her.
Mo Lan placed the medicine bowls on the table, washed her hands, and shook off the dirt from her clothes with a towel before cautiously sitting beside Qian Yin. She gently stroked Qian Yin’s face and murmured, “Yin, please wake up. You still have me.”
Dong, Nan, Xi, and Bei entered the room, standing guard at the door to keep others out. They had not forgotten Lord Mo’s anxiety over his son’s affairs. Heaven only knew if they might resort to violence against Qian Yin to pressure Mo Fan.
Mo Lan fed her carefully, occasionally speaking about the joyful days they had shared, hoping with every word that Qian Yin would move a finger, blink an eye, or wiggle her toes.
But sadly, Mo Lan and the four were disappointed. No matter what Mo Lan said—even words that moved the others deeply—Qian Yin showed no sign of waking.
Tears streamed down Mo Lan’s cheeks—not feigned, nor meant to prove the depth of their bond to the others. Their affection needed no validation or judgment from anyone.
Qian Yin lay like a wooden doll, motionless, and even feeding her the soup was a challenge, as Mo Lan feared choking her. Each time she fed her, she was extremely cautious.
Feeding left Mo Lan parched; she spoke gently as she gave the medicine. Yet the silent form on the bed offered no response, which disheartened her. Still, after each feeding, her heart lifted, believing that one day Qian Yin would recover.
Watching Mo Lan, Dong thought bitterly, “If only things had been different—if you hadn’t told Qian Yin about this, would she have ended up like this?”
Yet, Mo Lan’s vulnerability was touching. Dong stepped forward and poured her a cup of cooled boiled water, offering it to her.
Seeing Dong do this, Mo Lan wondered if it meant he was no longer angry. She smiled faintly, took the water, and drank it all.
Dong said nothing, returning to the doorway, choosing to ignore her. The water was not a sign of forgiveness, but of pity. After all, if something happened to Mo Lan, Qian Yin would surely suffer deeply.
Mo Lan placed the cup on the table and sat back down, lowering her gaze to the floor. Suddenly, she thought that if Bai Bai were summoned to stay with Qian Yin, perhaps it would cheer her and help her awaken. She could not bear to see Bai Bai saddened.
Excited, Mo Lan stood and looked at Dong. “Could you go to Principal Bei’s place and bring Bai Bai here? Maybe hearing Bai Bai’s voice will rouse Qian Yin.”
Dong, Nan, Xi, and Bei exchanged puzzled looks. A little girl? Qian Yin had mentioned her before, but would it help? They had never met Principal Bei and didn’t know where to find Bai Bai.
Seeing their hesitation and knowing that they needed to assist Immortal Elder with the herb garden, and that tomorrow would be busy, Mo Lan immediately took out her phone and called An Feng.
An Feng was sitting alone by the window, gazing at the night sky, lost in thought under the same starry expanse. What was Mo Lan doing now? Was she resting and taking care of herself?
His phone suddenly vibrated. An Feng answered immediately, brightening to hear Mo Lan’s voice. “Hello?”
“Are you free tomorrow? Could you help me bring Bai Bai here?” Mo Lan was in no mood for sweet talk; she was busy with many tasks.
An Feng’s lips twitched. She only called when she needed something. Was he really her boyfriend? Couldn’t they just go out for coffee, enjoy flowers, or swim without her always needing help?
He took a deep breath, exhaling his frustration, determined to stay calm. They couldn’t fight now—that would be too hard to mend.
“Yes, I’ll go get her first thing tomorrow morning.” He paused, expecting Mo Lan to say something comforting.
“Oh, thanks. That’s all. I’m hanging up.” Mo Lan had many things to attend to and didn’t realize how hurtful her words were to An Feng.
Angry, he almost threw his phone but couldn’t bear to part with it. Staring at the ended call, he gloomily looked back at the night sky.
Under the same night sky, the police station’s lights still burned brightly. Xiao Lin was enduring a hellish punishment.
Xiao Qi and Liu Fei decided not to go home. After washing up, they stayed at the station. They prepared a feast and tied Xiao Lin to a tree. Each held a cup of tea, downed it, and then approached Xiao Lin, each clutching a small twig.
