Chapter 148: Saving Master Mo (Part II)

Hello, Detective Mu Linli 2375 words 2026-04-01 06:56:34

An Feng nodded after listening, then held out his hand to signal for the phone. Elder Mo was confused at first, staring blankly at An Feng’s outstretched hand.

Many others present were equally bewildered, but Mo Lan understood immediately. She stepped forward, supported Elder Mo, and said, "Grandfather, he wants the phone. Give it to him so they can make contact. Don't worry; Father and my brother will be fine."

Looking at his granddaughter, who was still concerned for the two men even now, Elder Mo felt even more distressed. If he truly handed over all their assets, it would mean he had nothing left to leave for Mo Lan. He had originally intended to prepare a generous dowry for her wedding so her husband's family wouldn't look down on her. If he gave away the entire fortune, what would he have left to provide for her?

After handing the phone from the floor to An Feng, he kept his head bowed, unable to meet Mo Lan’s eyes, feeling deeply indebted to her.

An Feng checked the number displayed on the screen and dialed it, not speaking immediately.

"Old man, did you get the money ready so quickly? Let's meet at the Fengwan Woods." A coarse voice came through the phone, sounding incredibly rude and mocking.

The people present frowned; the voice fit the profile of the assassin world, though they didn't know which reckless group this was. Qian Yin, hearing the voice, curled her lips into a playful smile. She hadn't yet avenged the death of Cold-Blooded; for these people to deliver themselves to her doorstep—how perfect.

Mo Lan pressed her lips tightly together, watching to see how An Feng would handle this. If he handled it well, the Mo family would surely appreciate him more; if not, they would certainly hold it against him.

"Why are you silent? Don't try any tricks, or I can't guarantee their lives will remain in your hands," the voice continued, sounding impatient.

"Fine, we'll be there soon. Get ready," An Feng replied, scanning the room with a sharp glint in his eyes.

The other side hung up immediately after a brief acknowledgement, presumably to prepare and gather their men at the Fengwan Woods. The woods were located along the western road, near the maple forest at the crossroads, quite close to the boss's base. It seemed they were preparing for backup.

An Feng thought it over, looking at those present, but realized few were suitable to bring along for a rescue. Although the police force had undergone training and improved, they likely couldn't handle such an emergency.

"Just the three of us will go. The rest stay at the Mo estate," Qian Yin said before heading off to prepare.

Mo Lan nodded and followed Qian Yin to their room to pack.

The others opened their mouths to speak, wishing to join, but feared they would only be a burden. An Feng ignored them, resting quietly to catch his breath, finishing a glass of water in one gulp.

Back in her room, Qian Yin gripped her leather whip tightly. She was determined to tear the boss's gang to pieces; Cold-Blooded would not have died in vain. A murderous aura instantly filled the room, dimming the very lights.

Mo Lan, who had followed her in, said nothing. She stepped forward, tapped Qian Yin on the shoulder, and took her hand, having already secured her own pistol. Looking through the wardrobe, she selected a casual set of culottes in a light, elegant color—simple, beautiful, and effortless.

Mo Lan handed a matching set in a different color to Qian Yin with a faint smile, saying, "Wear this. Promise me, you’ll be happy from now on. No matter what happens, you must face it with a smile."

Qian Yin nodded, a strained smile touching her lips, and ducked into the bathroom to change quickly. Looking at her reflection in the mirror, she saw a pale, gaunt figure, bones protruding in a way that looked almost frightening.

Qian Yin sighed. If Cold-Blooded were still alive, he would surely ache to see her like this. She forced a smile, imagining the person in the mirror was him.

Stepping out, she saw Mo Lan, who was also dressed in the culottes. They reached out and locked hands, drawing close. Both had tied their hair back, looking neat and sharp. Dressed in the same style, they truly looked like sisters—equally beautiful.

They walked out hand-in-hand, much like when they first arrived at the Mo estate, but while the smiles were the same, the underlying tone had changed. Those present were struck by their appearance, each wanting to offer praise, but sensing the gravity of the situation, they held their tongues.

"Be careful," Elder Xian said simply. He offered no medicinal supplies, leaving them to rely on their own strength to bring the two wayward men back.

Mo Lan, An Feng, and Qian Yin nodded in silence. They scanned the room one last time and headed for the door. An Feng led the way, while Qian Yin and Mo Lan followed side-by-side, still holding hands.

An Feng felt deeply annoyed. With the two women holding hands like that, he felt like the third wheel. He was the one dating Mo Lan, yet with Qian Yin squeezed in the middle, he felt like the outsider.

Behind him, the two women wore smiles as if they were already assured of victory, paying no mind to An Feng’s expression or thoughts.

The three brought no money, intending to seize the hostages by force. Bringing money was too much of a hassle, and there was no way they would hand over the Mo family fortune. Those people were simply delusional.

The air was chilly in their outfits, and the wind whipped around their car, whistling past their ears as if whispering: *It’s so cold today, why are you two dressed so lightly?*

An Feng, driving in the front, watched the two women in the rearview mirror, still smiling as they looked out the window. He felt particularly disgruntled; it was as if they were heading out for a leisure trip rather than a rescue mission.

Their smiles seemed ironic and entirely out of place. The more An Feng thought about it, the more stifled he felt, though he said nothing, simply driving with an occasional burst of speed that made the two women frown in unison.

They soon arrived at their destination. Under the night sky, the maple forest lost its distinct character, looking like any other patch of trees, save for the unique, sweet scent of the maple leaves.

When they arrived, there was no one in sight. However, hiding behind the rows of maple trees were over twenty men in black, wearing black masks. Behind them sat a bound man—the head of the Mo family. Mo Fan was not with them. Elder Mo’s mouth was tightly gagged, his eyes wide. Hearing footsteps, he felt a surge of anguish; these people had come for him after all.

A breeze blew by, causing the leaves to rustle as they drifted downward, occasionally landing on Elder Mo’s head.
